Navy aircraft crashes in Pacific Ocean with 11 people on board
A U.S. Navy aircraft with 11 people on board plunged into the ocean near Okinawa while on its way to the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, military officials said Wednesday.
The plane crashed just before 3 p.m., according to the Navy’s 7th fleet. The number of fatalities, injuries and the cause of the crash was not immediately clear as rescue crews rushed to the downed aircraft.
The aircraft carrier is currently stationed in the Philippine Sea and has been conducting a field training exercise with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force near Japan since Nov. 16.
A Japanese defense official in Tokyo acknowledged the crash and told reporters a number of passengers were rescued, according to 47 News.
