Teen detained for dancing to Macarena in Saudi Arabia
A 14-year-old boy who went viral for dancing to the Macarena in the middle of a crosswalk in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has been detained by police.
The boy, whose identity has not been released, was questioned for improper public behavior and disrupting traffic, according to a statement from Mecca police on Tuesday.
It remains unclear whether the boy would be formally charged.
A 45-second clip shows the teen wearing a striped polo t-shirt and shorts sauntering into the middle of a crosswalk before he looking back at the camera and busting a move to the 1990s hit song.
The clip reportedly emerged last year and gained traction when it resurfaced on social media last week.
It remains unclear whether the boy was holding up traffic or simply dancing while the light was red, but five lanes of traffic can be seen stalled at the intersection.
A few weeks ago, the singer Abdallah Al Shahani was arrested in Saudi Arabia for “dabbing” onstage at a music festival after the dance move was banned in the kingdom.
A young woman was also arrested in July after a short video of her walking through an archeological site showed her wearing a miniskirt with a crop top while her hair was uncovered.
