Three servings of nuts a week can lower your risk of an early death by 39 per cent
Eating nuts could lower your risk of an early death, scientists have revealed.
Snacking on three portions of nuts a week could cut your chances of dying early by as much as 39 per cent.
It could also lower your risk of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, it’s been claimed.
Nuts could even help you to lose weight, scientists have reported.
Eating nuts lowered the risk of cardiovascular death by 55 per cent, Spanish scientists claimed in 2013.
It also lowered patients’ cancer risk by 40 per cent, compared to those that never ate nuts at all.
“Compared to non-consumers, subjects who consumed more than three servings of nuts per week had a significant 39 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality,” the researchers said.
“Nuts are high in monounsaturated fatty acids, fibre, minerals, vitamins and many bioactive compounds; all these nutrients may partly explain the beneficial effects on health that nuts have been shown to exert.”
Nuts decrease insulin resistance, and can control inflammation and oxidative stress, the scientists said.
Weight loss could also be boosted by snacking on nuts, according to Dr Emilio Ros, the former Director of the University of Barcelona’s Lipid Clinic.
“Epidemiologic studies and clinical trials suggest that regular nut consumption is unlikely to contribute to obesity and may even help in weight loss,” said Ros.
“Blood pressure, visceral adiposity and the metabolic syndrome also appear to be positively influenced by nut consumption. Thus, it is clear that nuts have a beneficial impact on many cardiovascular risk factors.”
Meanwhile, it was revealed that type 2 diabetes patients could improve their heart health by eating more almonds.
Heart disease is a complication of diabetes, so maintaining a healthy heart is important for the patients.
